Soteria Internet Predator and Internet Safety

Our Country Has Been Breached!

Our Children & Grandmothers Are Being Lured to Jail

In today’s digital age, the internet offers endless opportunities for connection and friendship. But lurking beneath the surface are dangers that can have devastating consequences, especially for vulnerable individuals. Recent cases highlight the alarming trend of teens, young adults and grandmothers being targeted by online criminal predators and coerced into smuggling drugs across international borders. These stories serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance and awareness in navigating the digital landscape safely.

They are targeting our youth...

Imagine being a quiet and reserved, 19-year-old girl* from Vancouver, full of dreams and aspirations, eager to make new friends and possibly explore the world. Now, picture finding yourself in a UK jail, thousands of miles away from home, with no understanding of how you got there. This is the reality that one vulnerable young woman, whose brain navigates the world with unique perspectives and limited experiences, is currently facing after falling victim to an elaborate and manipulative online scam.

According to reports, this vulnerable youth was targeted by individuals posing as friendly acquaintances online offering once in a lifetime job opportunities. Eventually, they convinced her to carry what she believed were two locked suitcases of jewellery across international borders to meet them, in person. Unbeknownst to her, these suitcases allegedly contained 35 Kgs of marijuana, leading to her arrest and current incarceration in a UK jail.

The situation is dire, and her family is understandably distraught. Despite their pleas for help, the Canadian government has yet to take meaningful action to assist in her return home. The Canadian consulate in London is aware of the situation, but efforts to secure her release have also been minimal. It used to be that children were taught how to spot predators in real life. This young woman’s story is a tragic red flag as to how the Ministry of Education has failed its students particularly those individuals with diverse and neurodivergent perspectives and experiences.

...and our Grandmothers!

It’s not just teens and young adults who are falling victim to these insidious schemes. Grandmothers, too, are being targeted by online predators and unwittingly drawn into criminal activities. Take, for example, the case of a Canadian grandmother who found herself embroiled in a romance scam that ultimately led to her unwitting participation in drug smuggling.

In her quest for companionship and love, this grandmother fell victim to the charms of an individual she met online. Little did she know, this person was manipulating her emotions and exploiting her trust for their own nefarious purposes. Before long, she found herself unwittingly carrying drugs across international borders, completely unaware of the danger she was in.

Her journey from romance scam victim to unwitting drug mule is more than just a cautionary tale for us all. Both of these cases serve as stark alarm bells. The relentless length drug syndicates will go to exploit vulnerable individuals for their own monetary gain is clearly on the rise!

The Canadian government must do more to protect our most vulnerable members and raise awareness of the dangers that exist in the digital realm. We cannot stand idly by while vulnerable individuals are targeted and exploited online. It’s time to raise awareness, to shine a light on the dangers that lurk in the digital shadows, and to advocate for change.
